EPIK HIGH | Portland, OR

The Crystal Ballroom was filled with fans of all ages, dotingly called “High Skoolers”. A few bystanders shared that they never heard of the Korean hip-hop group before; unknowing that they would soon be enlightened to the trio’s contagious energy. Fifteen minutes prior to the start of the show, the screen in the back of the stage lit up and Tablo appeared to have a mini version of The Pablo Podcast. Tablo quickly told a story mixed with memes related to Nike, which is locally headquartered less than 10 miles away from the venue.

Epik High took the stage, opening with their latest single, “Strawberry”. After the second song, the group dramatically introduced themselves as each person took center stage. DJ Tukutz came to the front first, followed by Mithra Jin and Tablo. This transitioned into their 2005 name-to-fame single, “Fly”. As the night went on, there were many moments where the group engaged with the crowd. Joking that it was an Epik High to smell Mr. Sketch markers, praising Tukutz about how hard he went on his dance moves during the hard-hitting beats of “Born Hater”, Tukutz reciting Backstreet Boy lyrics after sharing that his English wasn’t very strong, and calling out the crowd for recording the entire show when they wanted everyone to turn their phone’s flash to sway along. The front of the stage was lined with water bottles, assumingly for the band members to take sips from as needed. Instead, the crowd was surprised to find out that the trio would throw water on them throughout the night. Before the encore, Tablo gave somewhat of a motivational speech, thanking everyone for their support with Adele’s “Someone Like You” playing softly in the background before exclaiming it was time to show the hater’s what's up and steamrolling into “Don’t Hate”. The Korean hip-hop group delivered impactful lyrics and beats, showing love and gratitude for the crowd throughout the set, making it an Epik night.
