Louis De Schouwer Interview
Louis De Schouwer is a 20-year-old indie pop sensation based in Boston, MA, whose fresh and honest sound is sure to resonate with a lot of listeners. Hailing from Vero Beach, FL, Louis takes inspiration from the likes of Dominic Fike, Glaive, and Mac Miller, crafting feel-good tunes. He finally unveiled his debut single, “Missing”, on Friday, May 17th and has already garnered significant attention, boasting over 100k views on Instagram Reels and more than 14k likes on TikTok.
In our recent interview with Louis, he opened up about the inspiration behind "Missing", his artistry, breaking moment in the industry and upcoming plans.
- When did you first start making music, and what drew you to indie pop as your genre?
I first started making raps at 14 with a couple of friends from my sports teams as a joke and realized that I really liked the trial and error that went along with my early music. I wasn't originally into indie pop, but rap music because it was what I was surrounded by, but as I got a little older I grew to appreciate the realness and live aspect of their music.
- Can you recall the moment you decided that you wanted to pursue music professionally?
In highschool I did music as a hobby on the side of school and sports. I didn't realize until my senior year when my school guidance counselor suggested that I look into to Berklee College of music. The moment I opened my admission letter a lot changed in my head.
- Who were your musical influences growing up, and how did they shape your sound?
Growing up I listened to artists like Drake, Young Thug, and YNW Melly(who is from my hometown). Listening to rap gave me a background where the choppy rhythmic melodies came very easy to me. As I got older I combined my background with my present day influences of Dominic Fike, Bakar, and Dijon.
- What motivated your move from Vero Beach, FL to Boston, MA? How has the change in environment influenced your music?
I was motivated to move to Boston for University. I was accepted at Berklee and the offer was something I couldn't pass up. Overall it's been an incredible experience. The environment of being surrounded by creatives is amazing because it allows you to find yourself and really be who you are. Boston is a really progressive city as a whole and was a big jump from a conservative small town in Florida. I cannot be more appreciative of the opportunities snd experiences I've had in Boston. In doing so, Boston has allowed me to make genre-fluid and emotion filled music. I believe music is the result of emotions, and good music should evoke some sort of feelings or emotions.
- Congratulations on the release of your first single, “Missing”! Can you share the story behind the song? - What is your creative process like? Do you have any rituals or specific environments that help you write music?
Thank you so much! My song missing is about a guy who really likes a girl, but her feelings back are much more complicated and she is back and forth between her feelings. Causing the guy to feel insecure and question his own self worth, over her lack of commitment.
- Apart from music, what else inspires you in your day-to-day life? Are there any particular books, films, or activities that influence your creativity?
Growing up, I played three sports and was constantly active, going from one practice to the next. I'm constantly being inspired by sports and physical activity. As far as films go, due to my Belgian family lineage and history I tend to lean towards historical films and documentaries or comedy films, but I don't watch all that much TV. Of course, for most artists, the relationships and situations in and around your life sprout some of the greatest ideas.
- If you could collaborate with any artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?
Dominic Fike. No question about it. I love the way he matches his energy of florida, beach and sun, with LA grunge. He's an incredible guitarist and songwriter. I take so much influence from him.
- You've garnered significant views on Instagram Reels and TikTok. How has social media impacted your music career so far?
In the short time that I've been sharing my music on Instagram, I've doubled my account following completely organically. Seeing the progress is so rewarding. I can't thank the people who have followed and supported me enough. Seeing all the positive responses is so motivating, and often encourages me to continue on the path that I'm going because in the end I know it will pay off.
- Do you have any tips for other emerging artists on how to effectively use social media for promotion?
My advice would be to 1. Take your time in researching your market and audience. Find other people who have similar music and what things work for them. 2. Post very organically, don't try to be someone that you aren't and don't be afraid to make mistakes. 3. make sure you are open to criticism but don't take it to hard. Everyone always thinks they know best, but it's okay to make mistakes as long as you learn from them. 4. BE CONSISTENT. It's okay to miss a day here and there but create an ACHIEVABLE plan and a goal. Stick to it.
- What can we expect next from you? Are there any upcoming releases or projects you’re excited about?
YES! I have multiple new releases coming in the next couple months. My next song "Underwear" is chill summer track. A mandatory add to your summer playlist!
