Waterparks | Portland, OR

Waterparks is back on the road again for The Property Tour to promote their newest album Intellectual Property. The band, consisting of Awsten Knight, Otto Wood, and Geoff Wigington, returned to Portland on May 1st. The show was completely sold out, and fans were lined up outside hours before doors opened. Dressed head to toe in Waterparks merch, they were filled with anticipation for the show to begin.

The night began with two opening bands, Daisy Grenade and Hunny. Daisy Grenade started the night out. The Brooklyn bubblegrunge duo blew the crowd away during their performance. Lead singers Dani and Keaton complimented each other’s vocals and energies perfectly. They joked around with the crowd and thanked them for being so engaged in their set. The duo’s performance was filled with fun and a great way to introduce the crowd to the night they would be having.

After we said goodbye to Daisy Grenade, Hunny came on stage. The indie rock band unfortunately did not have their drummer with them due to an injury. That did not stop the band from putting on a great set. They performed new and old songs alike. Songs like “Vowels” and “July” brought the audience back to their classics. They performed their newest song “action → reaction”, which was very well received. The audience danced along to every single song. Lead singer of Hunny, Jason Yarger, was high energy with strong vocals that sounded just like the studio versions of the song. Bassist Kevin Grimmett and Guitarist Jake Goldstein also put on strong performances to make an overall amazing second opening set.

The anticipation for Waterparks had been building all night long. Fans were scooting up closer to the barricade as the clock ticked down to the moment they hit the stage. When the moment came, the band came out one by one until finally lead singer Awsten Knight joined the band in his signature red puffer jacket. They started the set out with the first song off their Intellectual Property album, “ST*RFUCKER”. It was the best way to begin the dynamic set.

The band is known for their jokes and how much fun they have during their live performances. Plenty of jokes were made during this show. From barking and commenting on how many furries were in attendance that night to rating the band member’s feet, Knight was very interactive with the audience. A fan even handed him their business card to get him to design a tattoo for her local shop. Knight also recalled their last show which he described as “Ottoparks” and shared a story about his guitar patterned shirt he had on that his dad got him in eighth grade.

They played plenty of new songs from their album like “Funeral Grey”, “Ritual”, and “2 Best Friends”. Classics like “Turbulent” and “War Crimes” were played alongside the new songs, which the audience absolutely loved. Knight even took a moment to play two acoustic songs for the crowd, along with a short cover of “Wonderwall”. They ended the night with 3 encore songs and the crowd was singing and dancing along for every single moment of the show. Overall, it was a night of pure entertainment and excitement for everyone in attendance. Daisy Grenade, Hunny, and Waterparks put on a show that was lively and filled with laughter that I’m sure everyone who was there will not forget.
