Yeah Yeah Yeahs | Portland, OR

Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ tour made a stop at McMeniman’s Edgefield, bringing along Perfume Genius for a sold out night that fans have patiently waited ten years for.

Fans sprawled across the lawn for the second show of the summer at the outdoor venue. Perfume Genius took the stage and was very playful with the crowd, making somewhat of a seductive act of winding up his microphone cord. As the set went on, he could be seen bouncing around, very loose. Magical runs on the piano and lights strobed and tinkled to “Slip Away”. Perfume Genius draped gray tulle over himself as he collapsed over a chair with a distorted voice to “My Body”. He ended with the crowd favorite, “Queen”.

Lead singer, Karen O, had all smiles as she entered the stage and surprised the crowd with Perfume Genius who accompanied her to “Spitting Off the Edge of the World”, from their most recent album, Cool It Down. In transition, Karen headed to the drum kit to take a sip of water and spit it into the air creating excitement in the crowd. Before performing “Zero”, she chatted with the crowd, wishing everyone a happy pride month, stating that life is hectic and we’re better together. Shortly after, two giant eyeball balls bounced around the crowd. The group said it was time to slow things down with “Soft Shock”. Before the encore, Yeah Yeah Yeahs played their hits “Gold Lion”, “Maps” (proclaimed it was the bass love song) and “Heads Will Roll”. Confetti filled the air as the crowds cheered because it wasn’t enough. After a short wait, the group walked back on the stage to perform “Y Control” in front of a collage of throwback photos on the LED. The night ended appropriately with the energetic “Date with the Night”.
