Laura Jane Grace “Hole In My Head” Review

Laura Jane Grace’s vocals immediately transport the listener to a realm of classic rock with her signature indie-folk vibes from the 2000s. The journey begins with “Hole In My Head,” blending into a fusion of eras in "I'm Not A Cop," where 50s and 60s nuances intertwine seamlessly with modern elements like backup vocals and spoken word.

"Dysphoria Hoodie" envelopes listeners in a cocoon of comfort, evoking the solace found in oversized hoodies, albeit its brilliant concept slightly falters due to a lack of lyrical intricacies, leaving gaps within its narrative. However, "Birds Talk Too" gracefully picks up the narrative thread from its predecessor, offering a cohesive flow throughout the record.

Consistency in both sound and emotion characterizes the remainder of the album. In "Punk Rock In Basements," Laura encapsulates the raw essence of musical beginnings, resonating deeply with anyone who has embarked on a musical journey. "Keeping The Faith" stands out as particularly poignant, evoking subtle echoes of old country with its heartfelt lyrics and gentle tempo. The album reaches its conclusion with "Give Up The Ghost," a track that resonates as both an anthem of resignation and acceptance.

While this album may not align with my usual musical preferences, it undoubtedly caters to a specific audience who will find solace in Laura's distinctive songwriting style. Reminiscent of revered artists who have carved their niche in the industry, Laura's work is poised to bring joy to those enamored with her musical expression.
