Scowl "Psychic Dance Routine" Review

Kat Moss (vocalist) is insanely dynamic in her skill, making Scowl as high-powered as it is, along with other band members Malachi Greene (guitar), Bailey Lupo (bass), Cole Gilbert (drums), and Mikey Bifolco (guitar). The adeptness of each member has given the band their distinct reputation of unconventional hardcore, which has won them tours with notable bands, such as Limp Bizkit and Destroy Boys, since their career began in 2019.  The band describes themselves as “if Negative Approach met The Breeders”, which is right on the money when it comes to their new EP Psychic Dance Routine

“Shot Down” and “Opening Night” both feel like 2000’s teen movie soundtracks, but with a bit more edge in being so energetic from beginning to end. “Psychic Dance Routine” leans further into a 90’s grunge vibe both lyrically and instrumentally that expresses what Moss describes as “the mental gymnastics used when feelings can no longer be described in words.” “Wired” also lends to The Breeders influence with compelling bass riffs, while showcasing the changeability Scowl possesses in genre with its vocals. “Sold Out” closes out the EP, heavy-hitting in sound and emotion.

Moss stated, “The overarching theme of this EP lies heavily in the definition of the name - I wanted to lyrically express feelings of alienation and loneliness as well as questioning my own reality. I made an effort to speak more with metaphors as I wanted these topics to be relevant to other people.”

Every track on this EP displays Scowl’s know-how of being incredibly individualized, able to make abrupt transitions come across seamlessly, and shows off their ability to be genre-fluid. Scowl is bold and absolutely fearless, always ready for what’s next whether it’s expected or not.
