We Are Scientists "Lobes" Review

It’s official - the vibe for 2023 is neon washed synthwave, and We Are Scientist’s new playful, feel-good, funky indie rock album LOBES is the perfect soundtrack to that vibe. A well-balanced album in every aspect, dynamic duo Keith Murray and Chris Cain will have you bopping and dancing all year long. Murray says it best, “LOBES is, overall, more electronic, dancier, more ominous, and way sexier than Huffy; ‘Operator Error’ kicks the door open into that seamy underworld.”

Boy oh boy is he right. This album certainly kicks the door open with “Operator Error” with a funky bassline, groovy guitar, and catchy background instrumentals to fill all the spaces in between, this song sets the perfect tone for the rest of the album. It’s impossible to resist the urge to dance.

Still aren’t convinced? Give “Less From You” a quick listen. This single just missed the Tron reboot, and someone needs to make a call to Hollywood to get this into some kind of futuristic movie. The hi-hat/guitar/synth mix in the chorus is so ethereal and movie picturesque that it would be a crime for this to not be in a movie. Can guarantee though that this song will be on repeat all summer for every necessary main character moment.

In case you needed another reason, the aptly named “Turn It Up” captures listeners’ attention and makes it near impossible to resist the urge to… turn it up. A pleasing rise and fall of synths with a back beat to put any night club to shame. This song is definitely a favorite off the album.

LOBES winds down the dance party on a perfect note with “Miracle of 22”. A hopeful conclusion that looks forward to the year. We’ve made it through 2022, all of 2023 is a head of us.

It’s never too early to start an AOTY list, and this album most definitely should be on it. So roll the windows down, turn the stereo up, and have an 80’s main character moment as you drive through the night under neon lights.
