Genevieve Miles Interview

Genevieve Miles, an artist hailing from Birmingham and Bristol who has carved her own path, elevates her poignant pop songs to a higher plane with her latest single, 'Tough Love’. This release comes right after her successful debut UK tour, marking the return of the indie pop sensation with her emotionally charged style.

We got to speak with her about her background, new release, and upcoming EP.

- What was the starting point of your music career?

I've written songs for as long as I can remember, since I was really little, and I started playing gigs when I was 13, so I guess it's hard to pin point when it became a career. Music is something that has always had a really powerful pull on me.

- Congratulations on the release of your new single 'Tough Love'. Can you tell us more about the inspiration behind the song and what it means to you personally?

I wrote this song in one of the lockdowns, I miss how much space there was to be creative in that time - I was writing a song pretty much every day and it was such good therapy. A lot of those songs were about the beautiful and painful journey of getting to know yourself again after an earth shattering break up, and this song was at a point of acceptance, when burning summer cools to autumn and you can breathe the fresh air.

- Your musical style seems to encompass a wide range of influences, from folk to funk and dance. How do you go about incorporating these diverse elements into your music and what do you enjoy most about experimenting with different genres?

I spent a lot of time worrying about fitting into a certain genre, and then found the confidence to just write whatever comes out. I love listening to all sorts of music and I feel like each represents a different facet of who I am, so I can use that to create loads of different stuff and each sound can represent a little part of my soul, it's nice to express yourself freely.

- Your previous single 'Good' gained over a million views after being featured in a Hyundai advert. How did this exposure impact your career and what did you learn from that experience?

Filming the advert was such a crazy day and I definitely learned a lot - it was just really cool that they asked to work with me, it was definitely such a lovely boost. When you work so hard, it means a lot when those opportunities come up.

- Can you share some insights into your upcoming EP release? What can fans expect from it?

I've been releasing singles from this EP for a while, I'm so proud of it, we've worked so hard for so long to make it exactly what I set out for it to be - it's all about accepting that you are a great big mess, but you are so worthy of love, despite the pain and the mess.

- You covered Fontaines D.C's song 'I Don't Belong' for the Rock the Breadline fundraiser. What inspired you to contribute to this cause, and how important is it for you to use your music for social and charitable initiatives?

A lovely artist called Jessica Luise invited me to be part of her online event. It is so important to write about, shout about and be part of causes that matter to you - women are brought up to feel they shouldn't speak up like that, so it always feels so powerful and so beautiful when women get together and stand up for what matters to them.

- Looking ahead, what are your goals and aspirations as an artist? Is there a dream collaboration or a specific milestone you hope to achieve in your musical journey?

My biggest dream is definitely to play at Glastonbury, I've been so obsessed with the festival for my whole life and that feels like what all the hard work is leading to - that's the big dream!! And other than that, just to keep playing gigs, I love playing with my band so much, we have so much fun and it's always such amazing therapy to scream and jump around.
