Lulu Simon "Muscle Memory" Review

Lulu Simon, LA based ‘sensitive-pop’ singer-songwriter presents a 5 song EP Muscle Memory just in time for sad girl autumn. A mix of songs about life as a recent Angelino and coping with the loss of a relationship, this EP is sure to have something that everyone can relate to. Fans of Carly Rae Jepsen should expect to enjoy an opening track that is bouncy, fun, and catchy on ‘All In’.

‘Something’ is a sad sort of whimsical. On this track, Lulu reminisces on the memories of a relationship - how this person was someone special - and shares her hopes for what she might be to them. This track dwells on what is, what could be, and what could have been for their relationship. Lulu sings ‘‘cause if we’re somethin’, at least we’re not nothing at all’ before going on to note what being something would require of the other person. This track is a perfect addition to the in-your-feels night drive playlists. Two tracks, ‘Something’ and ‘Driftwood’, are Taylor Swift-esque - the latter being a more up-tempo, something to bop along with in the car type beat.

The guitar intro on ‘Already the End’ is very reminiscent of the music of her father, Paul Simon of Simon & Garfunkel. With the longest run time on Muscle Memory, this track features an Austen-like feel especially with the lyric ‘if it hurt a little less, I could talk about it more’. Lulu keeps the acoustic sound rolling on the closing track ‘Being Alone is the Best’, where she tackles the emotions of feeling isolated and alone in a new place, as well as getting accustomed to and finding peace in being alone with herself.

Muscle Memory is a small sampling of what can be expected from Lulu Simon, definitely pop but with a sound that could almost crossover into the more modern country music sound. This album may not be for everyone, but for those who are into soft pop, it has the right ingredients for enjoyment. Overall, the album features soft vocals, synth-beats, and gentle guitar, making for some easy listening - perfect for driving with no destination or relaxing in a comfort spot.
